Nye County is one of the largest counties in the United States by area and the largest in Nevada, covering over 18,000 square miles. As of the 2020 Census, the population was around 51,500, with the majority living in the unincorporated community of Pahrump.[1]
The county seat is Tonopah, a historic mining town located near the geographic center of the state. Nye County is known for its mix of desert wilderness, military testing ranges, and rural communities. Large portions of the county are managed by the federal government, including parts of the **Nevada National Security Site** (formerly the Nevada Test Site).[2]
Key economic drivers include **mining**, **defense-related activities**, **renewable energy**, and **rural tourism**. Amargosa Valley, Beatty, and Round Mountain are active hubs for agriculture, mining, and service economies supporting regional industries.
