Cities and Towns in Mineral County

Mineral County is located in west-central Nevada and was established in 1911 from part of Esmeralda County. The county is named for its rich mining history, especially around Hawthorne, the county seat and largest community. As of the 2020 Census, the county had a population of just under 4,500 residents.[1]

Hawthorne is best known as the location of the **Hawthorne Army Depot**, one of the largest military ammunition storage facilities in the world. The nearby **Walker Lake** provides recreation and wildlife habitat, though water levels have significantly declined in recent decades.[2]

Other communities include Mina and Luning, both tied to historic mining and rail routes, and Schurz, home to the **Walker River Paiute Tribe**.
