Established in 1861 as one of Nevada’s original counties, Douglas County was named for Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas. The county seat is Minden, and nearby Gardnerville and Gardnerville Ranchos form part of the populous Carson Valley, known for its agriculture, scenic beauty, and historic charm.[2]
Douglas County is also home to Nevada’s portion of the Lake Tahoe shoreline, including the resort area of Stateline and the communities of Zephyr Cove and Glenbrook. The local economy is supported by **tourism**, **ranching**, **retail**, and **outdoor recreation**, with growing residential development due to its proximity to Carson City and the Reno–Tahoe region.
