Lyon County is located in western Nevada and is one of the state’s oldest counties, established in 1861. Named after General Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union general killed in the Civil War, the county blends rural agricultural communities with fast-growing residential areas. As of the 2020 Census, Lyon County had a population of over 59,000 people.[1]
The county seat is Yerington, a community with strong roots in farming and ranching. The city of Fernley, located near Interstate 80, has experienced rapid growth as a residential and logistics hub for the Reno–Tahoe corridor.[2]
Other key communities include Dayton, one of the state’s oldest settlements; Silver Springs, near Lahontan Reservoir; and Smith Valley, a fertile farming region. The county economy is powered by **agriculture**, **distribution centers**, **mining**, and **construction**.
