The Duckwater Shoshone Tribe is a federally recognized Western Shoshone tribe located in the remote Duckwater Valley of central Nevada, near the northern edge of Nye County. The tribe's reservation covers roughly 3,800 acres of desert and foothill terrain and is home to about 300 members.[1]

The tribe is part of the broader Western Shoshone nation, whose ancestral lands span much of Nevada and into neighboring states. Duckwater is known for its strong cultural identity, commitment to self-sufficiency, and efforts to sustain tribal traditions, including language revitalization, storytelling, and land stewardship.[2]

One of the defining features of the Duckwater community is its dedication to education. The Duckwater Shoshone Elementary School, operated by the tribe, is one of the only tribally run schools in the state and serves local children with a curriculum that blends academic learning with Shoshone language and cultural education.[3]

The tribe is governed by an elected tribal council and works closely with federal and state agencies to provide services such as housing, natural resource management, and health programs. Despite its geographic isolation, the Duckwater Shoshone Tribe remains active in regional and national advocacy for Indigenous rights and land protection.
