Wiki Content Guidelines

These guidelines help ensure that all pages on the Nevada Wiki are informative, consistent, and easy to navigate. All contributors are expected to follow these best practices when creating or editing content.

General Principles

  • **Stay Neutral** – Write in an objective, informative tone. Avoid opinions or promotional language.
  • **Be Clear and Concise** – Use plain language when possible. Avoid overly technical jargon unless it's relevant and explained.
  • **Focus on Nevada** – Content should be directly related to Nevada’s communities, government, geography, history, or culture.

Formatting Standards

  • Use `==` for section headers and keep page titles consistent with proper capitalization.
  • Avoid excessive bolding, italics, or underline—use them sparingly for clarity.
  • Use bulleted or numbered lists to break up information when appropriate.
  • Always include a `== See Also ==` section (if applicable) and a `== References ==` section at the bottom.

Linking and Structure

  • Link to other wiki pages using `Page Title` syntax.
  • Avoid overlinking (don’t link the same word repeatedly in the same section).
  • Use categories at the bottom of each page (e.g., ``).
  • New pages should be added to the appropriate hub (e.g., Environment, Government, Economy, etc.).

References and Sources

  • Use `<ref>` tags for citations and include a `== References ==` section with ``.
  • Link to official sources (state agencies, city governments, universities, etc.) when citing facts or data.
  • Do not copy and paste large amounts of copyrighted content.
  • External links should supplement—not replace—original writing.

Content Types and Tone

  • Pages should be written in the **third person**, unless clearly part of a personal or community-submitted listing (like in Marketplace).
  • Avoid first-person writing (`"I think..."` or `"we believe..."`).
  • When adding historical or cultural content, provide context and avoid speculation.

Marketplace Content

  • Use the designated form (`Special:FormEdit/...`) to post listings.
  • Use proper categories (e.g., Jobs and Gigs, Items for Sale).
  • Ensure listings are appropriate for a public community platform.

Page Templates and Reuse

  • Reuse page structures from existing high-quality pages when creating new content (e.g., Nevada State Parks, Public Transit).
  • Use consistent headings and layout wherever possible.
