- Battle Mountain – Unincorporated (County Seat)
- Austin – Unincorporated
- Kingston – Unincorporated
Lander County is located in north-central Nevada and is considered one of the state's original nine counties, established in 1861. Originally much larger, the county was later divided to form Elko, White Pine, and Eureka counties. As of the 2020 Census, Lander County had a population of approximately 5,700 people.[1]
The county seat is Battle Mountain, a community known for its ties to the mining industry, ranching, and its location along Interstate 80. Lander County is sometimes referred to as the “Geographic Center of Nevada.”[2]
Other communities in the county include Austin, a scenic former silver mining boomtown on U.S. Route 50, and Kingston, a small mountain settlement near the Toiyabe Range. The local economy is centered around **gold mining**, **cattle ranching**, and **outdoor recreation**.
