Tonopah is a historic mining town in Nye County, located almost exactly halfway between Las Vegas and Reno along U.S. Route 95. As of 2023, the estimated population of Tonopah was around 2,000, making it one of Nevada’s smaller but culturally significant communities.[1]

Tonopah was founded in the early 1900s following the discovery of silver by prospector Jim Butler, which sparked one of Nevada’s last major mining booms.[2] For a time, the town was one of the richest mining districts in the American West. Its historical significance is still visible today through preserved architecture, museums, and mining relics.

Tonopah serves as the county seat of Nye County and functions as a hub for regional services, government, and travel. The town is also known for its incredibly dark skies, drawing stargazers and astrophotographers from around the world.[3]

Notable attractions include the Tonopah Historic Mining Park, the hauntingly themed Clown Motel, and proximity to ghost towns, desert trails, and some of Nevada’s most remote terrain. Though small, Tonopah has a rich past and remains a quirky, proud piece of the Silver State’s high-desert legacy.
